The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the oldest political foundation in Germany established in 1925, is a private, public-interest institution committed to the ideas of Social Democracy. It bears the name of the first democratically elected German President, Friedrich Ebert, and carries on his legacy by shaping freedom, solidarity and social justice by political means. The Foundation fulfils this mission both within the country and abroad through its programmes of political education, international cooperation, scholarship and research.
Social democracy is based on social human and civil rights and seeks to reinforce them. It broadens and consolidates the basis of political democracy by including social justice, democratization of society, social security, sustainable development and international solidarity. Social democracy creates the conditions under which all citizens can fully exercise their fundamental human rights, participate fully and unimpeded in society, and contribute to he development of their country. It strives to secure equal opportunities in life and the right to have a say in the affairs of their community for all citizens, both men and women. Social democracy is practiced democracy for individual, including those who are socially vulnerable.
In our globalizing world, social democracy more than ever calls for solidarity and fairness. It is necessary to integrate a sense of political responsibility and social and ecological regulations in the world community and the world markets.
The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung contributes to social democracy by means of:
Political education in order to reinforce its fundamental values,
Scholarships for young academics who are committed to it,
Various forms of public dialogue in order to pave the way for it,
Development cooperation aimed at global justice,
Research and political consultancy to study its foundation and to impart it, and
Building bridges of international cooperation for world-wide democracy
